She’s going the distance

Filed under: Uncategorized — megs @ 11:12 am

I bought the Nike+ Sportband last week, and was very disappointed when, after downloading the software and charging the wrist receiver and following all the directions to the letter, I couldn’t get the dang receiver to talk to the foot sensor. I traded it in yesterday for another unit, and this one worked! I took it out this morning for my very first outdoor run in the park. The results:

A few things I learned this morning:

  • The path around the park is just over a mile long
  • Running outside is a completely different mindset then running on the treadmill
  • I am not yet capable of keeping a consistent pace
  • Make sure the counter is paused BEFORE I stop for water, or it will ruin my average pace and create giant dips in the graph (see above)

Summer – Nice while it lasted

Filed under: Uncategorized — megs @ 3:47 pm

The syllabus and textbook information have posted for my summer class. I now have, theoretically, a term’s worth of homework at my fingertips.

“Theoretically” because the professor wants to use the new edition of the casebook. The new edition doesn’t actually publish until “June” (quoth the man at The Law Bookstore). Is that the beginning of June? The end of June? It is a mystery. The two known facts of the situation are these: 1) The first day of class is June 2. 2) This professor has a Reputation; if I’m unprepared for class at any point, my grade will be cheerfully lowered and I will be made to suffer in inventive ways.

My current plan is to use the current edition of the book until the new one comes out. This is forces me to be even more proactive about homework then I planned to be, because I have to use the library’s copy of the casebook. If I buy the current edition from the bookstore, I risk not getting full return value if the new one takes too bloody long to print. The other trick is that I don’t want to work too far ahead, because when the new book is ready, it will no doubt cause changes to the syllabus. I’m going to work two weeks out, and see what the prof says on the first day of class.

PS: My property grade has already posted. It wasn’t great, but I don’t have to take the class again.

Thanks, Government!

Filed under: Uncategorized — megs @ 5:23 pm

Remember how I was waiting for a large sack of money? Well, the government kindly saw fit to give me one in the form of a tax rebate check. I’ve spent some of it already, on a new 80G iPod Classic, and an arm band. I intend to head out to the Nike store sometime soon and pick up that Sport Band gizmo I mentioned a few weeks ago. On Wednesday, Wii Fit comes out here in the states, and I’m going to get one for the house. Then my morning routine will shift to awake at 8:30, run in the park (I’m sure the downstairs neighbors will be happy about me NOT stomping around on their ceiling), come home for some Wii Fit , breakfast, shower, and start my day. Yay, health!

And so it ends

I have no idea how I did on my Civ Pro final. I think I managed the essay portion pretty well, but the short answer and multiple choice sections are anyone’s guess. This was about 80% of my final grade, and I did poorly on the midterm and I need all the points I can get. Ah well. I won’t know for a month or better, so why worry about it now? It is done, and I’m on Summer Break Part 1 for the next two weeks.

My plans are to:

  • Work a bit at the library
  • Get a hair cut
  • Clean the apartment
  • Get ahead on my summer Professional Responsibility course (which you will see me refer to in the future as Pro Res). This goal depends on when my teacher gets around to posting a syllabus for the class
  • Play video games – finishing Portal is on my list, as might be finishing Half-Life 2
  • General Larking About

Go big or go home

At 6pm I’ll be taking my last final of the term. I need to do pretty well to balance out my likely Property score. But hey, if law doesn’t work out for me, maybe I can convince Isis to take me on as an intern. Cats seem to have this whole career thing figured out.

Two down, one to go

Filed under: Uncategorized — megs @ 1:59 pm

Blah. The property final went about as expected. I finished 85% of the test. If what I finished was coherent, I might not have to take the class again next year. So I’ve not choice but to kick ass and take names for Civ. Pro. on Tuesday (you Utena fans thought I was going to finish that with “Revolutionize the world,” didn’t you?). Tuesday night even, so that’s about four days to study up. Here goes!

One down, two to go

I think I did really well on my Crim. Pro. final. At the very least, I’m sure I passed the class, and I might have scored a solid 3.0. Yay! Tomorrow will be exponentially harder.

Two quick pics

* I was all stressed out when I woke up, and I didn’t feel like exercising, but my faithful DDR cat was waiting for me to play.

* The last time we went to Venice Beach, I saw this bird, and thought he had a future in advertising.

And now its time to got to school and get ready for my final. Test is at 6pm – wish me luck!

Stress

A few quick thoughts:

* I’ve reached the Tourette’s syndrome phase of finals.

* This was perhaps not the best time to try and change my eating habits. I crave comfort food.

* I work the desk at the library today. Normally this is six hours of rarely interrupted study time. Today, with a school full of people who are also taking finals, I will be interrupted every ten minutes to make room reservations and get people study materials.

Exercise and attendant hassles

Filed under: Uncategorized — megs @ 3:15 pm

Lately I’ve been getting my exercise by playing Dance Dance Revolution. It has been nice to get my exercise done at home, and be able to just head right to school. So nice, in fact, I’ve been kicking around the idea of jogging in the park down the street.

Jogging has proven to be my favorite form of exercise. Maybe it is just the endorphins, but there’s nothing quite as satisfying, to me anyway, as how tired I feel at the end of a run. I tend to stick to the treadmill. I’ve tried jogging outside before, and generally I hate it. The thing that bothers me most is I don’t know how fast I’m going, or how far I’ve gone (unless I’m jogging on a track. And even then I don’t know speed). I have to carry my water around in one hand. I have to carry my bulky mp3 player in the other. I need a third hand to carry my phone, or I have to go without. Jogging in the park would fix the water problem – there are fountains scattered around the path. Water solved means I have enough hands for phone and mp3 player (or two arms to strap them too so I don’t have to carry them). But the speed and distance tracking is tricky. Nike makes a Sport Kit that would solve the problem. You attached the little accelerometer gizmo to your shoe (I happen to have a pair of running shoes that already has a place under the sole, but there are places that sell little pouches for non-Nike compatibility). You attached the wireless transmitter to an iPod Nano. The accelerometer talks to the Nano, and tells it how far it has moved from the start point, and how fast it is moving; better still, it literally tells YOU through your headphones. You can set distance or speed goals, or, if you put in some BMI information, you can set a goal for how many calories you want to burn. The disadvantage is I don’t own a Nano. It is too small to hold my mp3 collection, so I haven’t really looked at one as a replacement option for my current player.

***Megan browses the internet while writing this post***

Hey! New thing! A watch that uses the same foot sensor, but doesn’t need a Nano player. Perfect. Now I just need a large sack of money to fall on my head, so I can pick one up. (*looks up and waits patiently*)

Update: Here’s the thing, as actually released by Nike, not just speculatively released as in my earlier link. It will require a slightly smaller sack of money, but all the same, it is a sack I don’t have right now.
